Derek Dorn
Derek B. Dorn is Managing Director and Special Assistant to the CEO at TIAA, the leading provider of financial services in the academic, research, medical, and cultural fields and a Fortune 100 organization. Previously, as Head of Regulatory Engagement & Policy and Associate General Counsel, Derek led the team responsible for crafting and implementing TIAA’s regulatory engagement strategy and oversaw development, implementation, and communication of TIAA’s public policy agenda, positioning TIAA as a thought leader before public officials, industry organizations, think tanks, and clients.

Before joining TIAA, Derek was a Partner of Davis & Harman LLP, a Washington-based boutique law firm. There, he represented financial services providers, asset managers, and life insurers on a range of regulatory and legislative matters. Earlier, he held several positions in the U.S. Senate, most recently as Staff Director of a Senate Finance Subcommittee and Senior Finance Counsel to Senator Jeff Bingaman (D-NM) and earlier as Counsel to Senator Joseph Lieberman (I-CT).

Prior to entering public service, Derek managed a global investment research firm’s Washington office. He began his legal career at a global law firm, where he advised major nonprofit institutions and philanthropists on tax, charitable giving, investment, and corporate governance issues.

Derek’s leadership on defined contribution policy has earned him recognition as among 401kWire’s “100 Most Influential in Defined Contribution” and election to membership in the National Academy of Social Insurance. A frequent speaker, he has presented on retirement, tax, economic policy, and regulatory issues at over 200 institutional investor, retirement provider, plan sponsor, and law conferences worldwide. Derek’s insights have been quoted in sources as diverse as Bloomberg, BusinessWeek, CNN Money, and Pensions and Investments.

A New York native, Derek holds a B.S. (honors in labor economics) from Cornell University and a J.D. from Yale Law School, where he was Senior Editor of the Yale Law Journal. From 2008 until 2015, Derek was an Adjunct Professor at Georgetown University Law Center. Currently, he serves on the Board of Directors of the Employee Benefits Research Institute (EBRI).
